Hi Pretty Birds,
I've been fully enjoying the amazing things that I picked up at J.Crew six posts ago. That spree included a number of oxford button downs, brocade shorts, tuxedo trousers and a spectacular necklace. And not surprisingly, the button downs have become a part of my Summer uniform.

I wear them with skirts, cut-offs and jeans (skinny alla Emmanuelle Alt and baggy like your boy-friend's), and I've mixed-n-matched them with other staples in my closet. Like my Givenchy skate shoes, RetroSuperFuture sunnies, AG cut-offs, and Mercado Global clutch. What are you mixing-n-matching this weekend?

Meet this week's Pretty Bird, illustrator Liselotte Watkins. You may be familiar with her work, her pens are responsible for iconic collaborations with Miu Miu, Absolut, Marimekko/H&M, Valextra and Rodebjer. I first met her when we worked on a watch editorial for a magazine here in Milan. That was an awesome experience to say the least, and for our celebratory lunch she wore a vintage white fur chubby and high waist flare jeans (immediate crush!). Not long after that, she totally amazed me when she agreed to illustrate me for my Tamu's Diary on Grazia.it. I was so honored! I love that illustration so much, please see it below the interview. In the meantime, please join me in getting to know this amazingly stylish wife, mother and illustrator...

I feel like noticed Cleopatra from a mile away (or at least from the other side of Main Street here in East Hampton), she's just stunning! I love her beach-side braids, fresh out of the water, fresh off the beach. Happy Monday.

Remember that I mentioned in my last post, that my friends Rudi, Michi and Costi were visiting us from Italy, and that Michi and Costi were dressed in the cutest breton stripes? As promised, here are the photos and a little interview...

This is your first trip to New York and the U.S. What do you want to see?
Costi: Central Park Zoo, Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Madison Square Park.
Michi: Central Park, the Guggenheim, MOMA and Met museums, Ground Zero 9/11 Memorial, Union Square, West Village.

Why do you love stripes?
Costi: Because they remind me of the American flag.
Michi: They remind me of the sea, the fishermen and they put me in the mood for vacation.

What's your favorite nail color? Manicure?
Costi: Purple, and mix-n-match hands.
Michi: Vibrant Corals.

What do think about the Hamptons?
Costi: The houses are beautiful, the beaches are beautiful, and I love the shells.
Michi: Paradise on earth.

On Friday we had lunch at Babette's. What did you try? Did you like it?
Costi: Chicken Tenders with Sweet Potato Fries. I really liked the chicken tenders because they were crunchy and spicy. I didn't like the sweet potato fries because I'm not used to the paprika.
Michi: Vietnamese Spring Rolls. They were cold and the flavor was fresh, I like to experiment with new foods and loved that the taste changed completely with the dipping sauce.

Any shopping planned for your trip to NYC this week?
Costi: FAO Schwarz, My Little Sunshine.
Michi: Barney's, Bergdorfs, Blahnik.

Food?
Costi: Shake Shack
Michi: Eataly, Danji, Estela, Blue Hill, Lafayette, Mighty Quinn's, Sarabeth's.

I'm bringing my camera along because Michi and Costi are wearing matching mommy and daughter stripes, so cute and perfect for this Sunday's friends post. Well, see you later and HAVE AN AMAZING WEEKEND! xoxo, Tamu

Details: I'm feeling beach-cool with out-of-the-shower hair, an MSMG t-shirt, CofH paisley print cut-offs and Nars Heatwave lipstick.

Yesterday, while I was buying everything I could get my hands on at the J.Crew store (have you seen the new arrivals? Yikes!), my son and husband ventured out by themselves to buy a new pair of goggles for camp. Although unaccompanied shopping trips are usually not a good idea for them, they ended up getting these incredibly fun pair by TYR (don't they sort of remind you of the Balenciaga "Lego" Sandals, color wise?). I love them, and think that I'm going to have to get a pair for myself. They're too cute to pass up on!

Hey Birds,
How're you doing? My family and I are happily back in East Hampton for our annual Summer Vacation. So psyched to be here after a mega-hectic pre-holiday week. But things are definitely rosier on this side of the pond. I  wanted to do a fun outfit post from the beach to say hello to you, but I wasn't able to steal away from my family and friends this weekend. I know that you'll understand. I'll get something up soon though. In, the meantime here's a pic of Evelin Joos (Natalie's sister). I bumped into her outside La Fondita yesterday afternoon. I was just excited to see her in an easy denim shirt (surprise!), beach friendly PJ style shirts and in-again-thanks-to-Phoebe Philo Birkenstocks. Stay tuned to see what I was doing there. It's going to be fun. ;-) I promise!!!

By Sara Schifano

Hello Arty Birds,
In the midst of thinking about something interesting to share with you in this installment and trying to survive New York’s heat wave, I asked myself what is the biggest challenge in discussing contemporary art with a non-art audience.

This question comes to mind every single time I have to write an article, as my biggest accomplishment as an art writer would be to make everyone understand that art today goes far beyond the traditional concepts of beauty and craft.

This is very hard, as a lot of people approach art with a filtered mind: “I could have done that”, “that is just ugly”, “I don’t understand it”. It is also hard because ‘art people’ often don’t really make an effort to be understood. But, let’s face it, who said that art was easy anyway? With these thoughts in mind I decided to bring you two artists who are now rocking New York: James Turrell and Paul McCarthy.

I decided to feature them both in this post for a number of reasons: they are both big, established artists; they are both American; they are both exhibiting in great institutions; and finally they will both give you strong gut feelings, but in very opposite directions.

Since the late 1960s James Turrell has practiced art solely through one medium: light. His work at the GuggenheimAten Reignis thought specifically for the notorious rotunda of the museum. Hundreds of daily visitors will find a completely transformed space, manipulated by both natural and artificial light. James Turrell invites them to slow their pace, get closer to their senses and perceive the physical experience of light. Like he said during the presentation of his installation, ‘light has the most power without image. My work has no image, no object, no focus. So what do you have left? A lot."

You might take this as a free meditation class, you might feel like you landed in Superman’s Fortress of Solitude, and you will without any doubt, leave peaceful, relaxed, speechless.  Could just anybody have done this? Doubtful.

So yes, art can be spiritual, meditative. But forget all that and meet Paul McCarthy, an artist who had to wait a long time to get fame and recognition. His extraordinary language is definitely not for everyone. WS, his latest project installed in the imposing space of the Park Avenue Armory is NC-17. Why? Remember Snow White? Make it White Snow and transform it in a weird sexual tale of American life. McCarthy, whose work always dealt with the dark side of American culture, presents what has been defined as a Gesamtkunstwerk (A total work of art). This installation, however, is much more than a twisted version of a classic fairy tale. It’s a hallucinatory trip through the artist’s own life and the imagery of pop culture. It is explicit, often gross, but also quite magnificent. The primal noises and images of a repressed sexual fantasy running in the huge video projections will torture your ears and maybe confuse you. You’ll be walked through a sick peep-show of the after-effects of all the debauchery spying through the windows of the exact copy of the house where the artist grew up and then abandoned for a walk through a real scale doomed forest. Call it violent, or maybe honest. McCarthy tricked you, because you’re not in New York anymore. The artist, very generously, invited you inside his personal delirium. Just be careful not to judge him too fast.

What do you think then? This is not traditional painting, it’s not really sculpture, it’s hard to collect and put in your living room, but somehow it’s capable of bringing you far from your comfort zone. Like a good trip, anything that brings us far away from our usual perspective is a positive experience and this is what, today, we should call ‘great art’.

James Turrell, Aten Reign at the Guggenheim June 21–September 25, 2013.

Paul McCarthy, WS at the Park Avenue Armory until this Sunday August 4th. Stop by if you are in town.

Hello Pretty Birds! I just wanted to thank you for all of your amazing birthday wishes on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. You made me feel absolutely amazing. Thank you and lots and lots of love to you all! Here are some highlights from my special day. xoxo, Tamu

From the top:
1- A slice of the absolutely delicious birthday cake that my son Piero Jackson and his nanny Jessie made for me. I wish I could share it with you.
2-5 My Italian sista Viviana and I met up at Di Viole Di Liquirizia to exchange b-day presents. Viviana's birthday is August 19th. Make sure that you give her a shout. She gave me a fantastically gorgeous Sveva Necklace (LOOVE), and I picked up this fun Lulu Guinness Eye Clutch for her.
6- After enjoying a super, yummy muffin with ViVi, I swung by Nike Stadium to customize a pair of Lunaglide 5s for October's San Francisco marathon (Nike is sponsoring me!), and team Nike treated me to these awesome neon Lunaglide 5s and these Tropical Solarsoft Moccasins from the Hawaiian collection (Yes, you know that I'm dreaming of Prada men's SS14).
7- And finally these gorgeous, gorgeous flowers are from my super fantastic husband (37 ROSES for my tender 37 years), and from my super fantastic friends at Tory Burch and Tommy Hilfiger.

Any other Leo's out there? What are you doing for your birthday?
