After weeks of chipped, funky nails, I finally made it back to Bahama Mama for a manicure. I originally wanted a deep red color, but fell for this purple shade instead. Maybe I was inspired by Angelica's coat. ;-)

All my life I can remember bouncing to one genre of music or another: roots & culture, dance hall, pop, rock, house, acid, jungle, hip hop, indie. And even if I was never a particularly good dancer, I always had a Good Time. In fact, one night after dancing at a club in NYC, my roommate confessed with a sort of amazement in her voice that she thought I was a pretty bad dancer. Shocked and deflated, I asked her why she hadn't pointed this out while we were on the dance floor. She responded...
... that I "looked like I was having the time of my life" so she "didn't have the heart" to tell me. (ROTF) Her comment about my dancing didn't sting as bad as the time she told me that I had chicken arms, so I let it slide and I'm still dancing today. I sometimes even dance while walking down the street. Hey, I know when I'm doing it, so no cray-cray here (maybe just a little, but that's another story).
So what's up with the video and my chattiness this morning? I have an announcement! I'm thrilled to tell you that my friend Gaia Venuti, the brilliant mind behind my favorite Milanese beauty concept store Bahama Mama, has opened up a dance studio called Black Mama!!! For me, 2013 is about indulging in all of the things I truly love. Therefore, I'll be spending many a free evening there, studying Hip Hop and Tap routines, how to move gracefully in high heels, and how to be the best drag queen and diva possible. I love it!
Gaia and her extraordinary Artistic Director Cinzia Ceglie have selected the best instructors in Italy. As always, the space is absolutely incredible, the atmosphere is 1940's theater and the decor, Chippendale. It's the perfect ambiance for getting into the groove.
Here is a video of my first hip hop lesson with professional dancer and choreographer David Bellay. As you'll see in the video, my goal is to eventually nail a Beyonce dance routine. I'm a really long way off from that, but I'm going to have a hell of a Good Time getting there.

Before the Italian holidays, I had the pleasure of shooting my friend Gaia and asking her a few questions about her style. Gaia is the insane eye behind Bahama Mama. She inspires me everyday, and I'm sure she will inspire you too. Enjoy!
Where were you born, and when did you move to Milan?
I was born in Florence; I’ve lived in Milan since 2000.
You have an amazing eye for fashion and design. Tell me 5 memories from your childhood/teenage years that influenced your eye.
My dad has been making shoes since forever, and my playroom at home was his office, with his pattern books on display.
When I was six, we were in London and we saw some punks passing by. I told my dad: “I’m going to do that job when I’m a grownup”.
When I was four, and until I was fourteen, I began working for a Florentine fashion agency. I modeled for fashion magazine shoots (but I was also the one helping the stylist).
I changed the layout of my room every single day, which drove my mom crazy.
In the afternoon I arranged shows with my schoolmates, dressing them up and teaching them how to be “on stage”.
I have always gone with my dad on his business trips. I was absorbing fashion and style every single day.
Your mom and dad must have wonderful style. What do you like most about their personal styles?
In my mom’s, the fact that she doesn’t have a defined style, but she’s able to wear anything while never appearing out of place.
About my dad, besides him being objectively a cool guy, I love his ability to mix with absolute ease Tom Ford, Converse and Armani.
You can’t count them, they’re big pieces done over time. I got the first when I was 13.
What draws you to tattoos? What do you tell yourself when people point at you because of them?
They’re my most beautiful clothes... every time I get a new one it’s like I’m working on completing my outfit.
When people point at me, I just think that superficiality has no limits... you should judge souls, not skins.
You have an important vintage archive: when did you start collecting?
At 13, when I asked for my first pair of Prada shoes as a gift.
What do you look for when vintage shopping? Do you have a favorite decade?
I look for whatever catches my fancy and my attention. Every decade has something that moves me.
Your 5 favorite pieces in your vintage collection.
A silver micro-sequins Chanel jacket worn only once by Claudia Schiffer.
A Chanel mini bag (10 pieces made) decorated with piercings.
An Hermes silk blouse with allover print.
An Hermes belt with gold elephants buckle.
A cheetah fur coat from the early 70s which was my mom’s.
You have an amazing eye for antique objects too. How many do you have? What do you like about collecting objects?
It’s impossible to count them!
My favorite by far is Fornasetti (Piero, not Barbaba).
Vintage teapots and tea cups.
Capodimonte ceramics.
Antique dentures from the 19th century.
Ceramics reproductions of human body parts and animals.
Antique jewelry.
What inspired you to open Bahama Mama?
I simply made real what I saw in my dreams.
How long did it take to complete the project?
Less than I thought! I found the place and within a few months everything was ready.
How much of your style do we see in your space?
100%... it’s my second home, every corner speaks of me.
You created a truly special place for women in Milan. What is, in your opinion, the significance of the relationships shared between women?
I think women have so much to tell and possess a peerless inner strength, let alone their ability to express themselves through their body and style.
My ambition is to debunk the myth of our being jealous of one another and of our not being genuine with each other. I wish we could become more and more trusting.
Any new projects for the future?
Actually, yes... in October I will open a new space in Milan, still dedicated mainly (but not exclusively) to the feminine world, where every one of us will be able to express her truest, most feminine and secret part. But I can’t disclose anything more right now... Stay tuned!!

I know, I know. I broke my promise, I haven't posted any weekly manicures since last month. Please forgive me, things gave been pretty hectic over in my neck of the woods. But now I'm back on track with a multicolor evolution of my last manicure. I found it on one of the pinterest boards I follow and had to get it on my hands straight away. And now that I'm posting this, I think the bunting that I've been researching for my son's new room may have also inspired me too.

Here's this week's manicure. They're suggestive heart bottoms at the tips of my nails in Essie "orange, it's obvious" (which I think is becoming my favorite). I can't take any credit for the title. It came to me by way of two sources. First, and obviously, it's the title of Beyonce's totally catchy song "Love on Top." You know the one she performed on the 2011 MTV VMA's when she she gave us the first glimpse of her growing Blue Ivy bump? The second source for the title came from a really cute piece that that we published on Grazia.it featuring bloggers like Nicole of Gary Pepper Vintage wearing gorgeous bra tops and bustiers. This week I showed up to Bahama Mama without any inspiration for my weekly manicure. So Gaia, the owner, buyer, merchandiser and genius behind the gorgeous taste salon, suggested I get a manicure with a matte finish. A suggestion to which I responded a flat no. I have disliked matte polish from the time my best friend Andrea introduced it to me a few seasons ago. Gaia insisted. She told me how amazing it would look in Essie "Geranium," and how it would make my hands look like "Barbie hands." I relented because she's got incre-e-e-e-e-e-edible taste. I was so crazed last week that I wasn't able to post my weekly manicure. Since I was headed to Miami for my best friend's bachelorette party, I opted for bright random strokes of Essie "orange, it's obvious" and "lights". It was a great choice considering that we rented a barbie-pink, stretch hummer for the weekend. Lol! The hummer wasn't as tacky as you are probably imagining. Honestly speaking, we all kind of fell in love with it's bubble-gum hue. Sure people were staring, pointing and laughing at us every time we pulled up to a venue, but hey, bachelorette parties weren't meant to be posh affairs.

O.K., the winter hibernation period is officially over. No more excuses for completely ignoring my beauty routine! No more skipping waxing sessions, no more clogged pores, and no more chipped nails! So many beautiful spring dresses and sky high platforms to debut, the Spring calls for full-on glamour! How do I plan to achieve my goal of all-or-nothing gorgeousness you ask? Well, I've already resumed my weekly appointments at my favorite beauty taste bar Bahama Mama. And, while I'll spare you imagery of my varied beauty treatments (thank god!), I'm more than happy to show you my colorful french manicure. In fact, to prove I'm no beauty slacker, I'll be posting my weekly manicures all summer long. Don't think I can keep up the routine? Check back next week!
Now if I could only give up the doughnuts ;-).
